P.E. teacher Ms.Kristen Oyola graduated from Salem in 2016. Not only does Oyola teach P.E., but she also coaches varsity field hockey. She was a member of the field hockey team when she was a student here.
Already in her first year coaching she has made an impact on the team.
“It is exciting and fun being able to have a coaching perspective instead of a student athlete perspective,” said Oyola.
Not only is she a coach, but she serves as a mentor and has a special bond with each athlete.
“Being the field hockey coach has been awesome and I love my girls,” said Oyola. “Sometimes I feel like a mom with 16 children to take care of.”
The team’s record this season is now 4 and 5 with one more game left and the team will be going to regionals.
“Last year they only had one win so we are already way ahead,” said Oyola.
In addition to coaching responsibilities, she also deals with challenges of being a young teacher.
“Students forget you are also their teacher and not their friend,” siad Oyola. “It’s hard to juggle being a teacher, but also wanting to do fun activities while you’re still young.”
If all that isn’t enough Oyola is also taking classes to get her master’s degree and is planning her wedding. Her dedication serves as a model for her students and her athletes.
