Fighting Demons, a review

Juice Wrld’s second posthumous album

Payton Gross, Staff Writer

On  December 10, 2021, the album Fighting Demons, by Juice Wrld was released. It’s the second posthumous album released since his death from an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine in December of 2019. It focuses primarily on his struggles with drug addiction, but it also brings to light his battle with depression and anxiety.

Overall, I really enjoyed this album. It brought forth a new light to Juice’s life that hadn’t been shared very publicly until now. The album’s first song, “Burn,” gives off some very dark vibes. It primarily talks about feeling detached from reality, or being numb, and how Juice used drugs and money to try and solve his problems. It has a really nice beat , but the message that’s being shared along with just the darker feel of this song makes it difficult to listen to. This song sets the tone for the majority of the album, with most of it having a very dark and gloomy feel; much different than some of the music he’d released in the past.

Three times on the album, the music stops and is replaced by interviews. One of these is by rapper Eminem, who speaks out about his own battle with opioid addiction, and how easily it can eat you alive. The other two interviews are with Juice, where he speaks directly on his personal issues with both drugs and his mental battles. One of these brings to light how difficult it was for him growing up in the black community because he felt his issues of anxiety and depression were neglected. He acknowledges that, “ talking about certain things could help somebody else through what they’re going through, as well as me trying to figure out myself.”

Something that was agreed upon by much of Juice Wrld’s community, was how nice it was that there weren’t really that many features on Fighting Demons. Commonly when posthumous albums are released, much of it is just bits and pieces of the artist, in other people’s music. However it’s been brought to the attention of the public through Twitter, and through the new documentary, “Into the Abyss,” that Juice recorded lots of music to release before his death.

I’d give the album four out of five stars.
