Tips for Senior Year

Advice from a graduating senior for future seniors

Aurora Mangune, Staff Writer

Senior year is a big deal for students and even parents. At the end of junior year, senior year may seem daunting, but it is also a ton of fun. As a graduating senior, here are some tips I came up with to help you enjoy your last year of school to the fullest.

Manage your time wisely

Time management is one of the biggest challenges for seniors. Attending important events while still keeping your grades up can get difficult.

In school, try to complete as much homework as you can during the school day so that you can fully prioritize other activities after school. To keep yourself organized, buy a planner or use Google Calendar and be careful to always write down your obligations.

Stay updated

Junior year may be considered “the hardest year,” but seniors still have a long to-do list of tasks to complete. Schoolwork, jobs, clubs, volunteering, and college applications are difficult to juggle, making it easy to forget a deadline or meeting.

A lot of emails and reminders that were sent to me were time-sensitive, and a lot of times they went unseen until it was already too late.

Turn on push-notifications for all your school accounts so that they show up on your phone! This includes Schoology, Gmail, Remind, and any other programs you might use for school.

If you are ever unsure about any details for an event or an assignment, check the senior Schoology page and don’t hesitate to ask a teacher if you’re still unsure. Even if they don’t have the answer they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Consider early dismissal or late arrival

If you have scheduled all your required classes for graduation, you may be eligible to have three classes a day instead of four.

Applying to come into school a block late or leave a block early can allow for a more stress-free and flexible school day.

Make sure to pick up an application in the guidance office before the first day of school.

Apply early

Early is officially the new on time! Senior year is full of forms to fill out: FAFSA forms, college applications, scholarships, internships, and part-time jobs. If you want to increase your chances for acceptance submit applications as soon as you can.

However, be careful not to fill out applications so fast that they are not done well. Before submitting, make sure to double-check your information and have a teacher or peer look over it too.

Have fun!

With all these tasks on your mental checklist, it is easy to forget to take care of yourself. Graduation will come in the blink of an eye, so don’t forget to make good memories during your final year of high school.

Spend time with friends and support extracurriculars by participating in clubs, going to sports games, and attending VPAA performances. You can also look forward to events like Homecoming week, Senior Prom, and Gradfest.

Senior year is a big deal and a great accomplishment. Keep calm and senior on!
