A battle of cinemas

Streaming services vs theatrical releases

Jordan Fiedler, Staff Writer

Grab some popcorn and take a seat, but will that seat be at home or in theaters? The way people enjoy movies has changed since COVID, with streaming services and theaters sometimes both playing the same movies simultaneously.

The question is, now that we have more options to watch new films from home, will we choose to do that? Are movie theaters a thing of the past? Or is it still worth it to shell out ten to fifteen dollars to watch a film on the big screen?

“Although movies have a good cinematic feeling in theaters nothing beats cooking and setting the vibe yourself,” said senior Abby Johnson. “When COVID hit and movie theaters closed, it limited the amount of time I went out to theaters and I used at home services as a coping mechanism for not being able to go out.”

Movie theaters are known to make the experience better, because they have better equipment with which to experience the films.

“I would rather watch movies in theaters,” said Malone. “They have better screens and sound systems than you could ever get at home.”

Malone also noted the energy you get from watching movies in theaters with all of the immersive images and sound as well as others in the theater who affect how a movie is enjoyed and one simply can not get that at home.

“If you are watching a movie on your phone, have you really seen that movie?” said Film Club Sponsor John Moss.
