Modern Warfare II: good game or super lame?

A thorough review of MWII’s multiplayer and campaign game modes

The brand new sequel to the Modern Warfare series reboot, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II” (2022), is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the latest installments to the Call of Duty (or CoD) series. Both the multiplayer and campaign game modes in the new MWII have shown significant improvement from the previous games in the CoD franchise in the new game’s gameplay, graphics, storyline, and more.

“It’s a return to form,” said senior Jordan Barté who plays CoD. “It’s what fans of CoD were asking for, but not much else.”

The multiplayer in the new MWII is enjoyably reminiscent of the 2000 – 2010 era of Call of Duty games, except with better graphics and cross-compatibility with other platforms. However, that doesn’t mean that the new game is perfect.

“The campaign is fairly fascinating because the fighting is ‘modern,’” said Barté.  “Story-wise, it was kinda slow, boring, and used too many clichés.”

The new MWII is precisely what it says it is: a reboot. It is exactly what’s to expect from a CoD game, with the bonus of more advanced technology lending itself to a better gaming experience. Aside from the stunning graphics, the most noticeable difference between the new 2022 reboot and the legendary 2009 initial release is the campaign.

“The new campaign was mid,” said junior Trent Winterbottom, a regular Call of Duty player.

The campaign in the new Modern Warfare reboot, unlike the multiplayer, is wildly different compared to its original counterpart, with major changes to the game’s plot and characters. Nevertheless, it still holds to the original games by starring classic characters like Cpt. Price, Ghost, and Soap MacTavish in new, insane, dangerous missions.

“My favorite character was Soap simply because bro is so funny,” said senior Rj Mendoza.

Although there are noticeable flaws in the game, such as glitches and bugs, the new MWII gives a nostalgic feeling while putting a small, refreshing twist on the franchise that’s made shockwaves throughout the gaming community. Though we cannot envision exactly what’s to come, the new MWII seems to be a step in the right direction compared to the recent streak of sub-par to downright awful CoD games.

“I feel Call of Duty Vanguard had many kinks they needed to flatten out to be remotely close to a polished video game,” said Mendoza. “Cold War just reached the bare minimum of the Call of Duty standards, but zombies saved it from becoming mid. Modern Warfare II seems really fleshed out and actually worth the $70.”

The newly released “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II” has extremely mixed views, from every angle, and obviously won’t be for everyone. However, if players want to enjoy new, thrilling gameplay paired with jaw-dropping visuals while hanging with the same gang of misfits we all know and love or intense, engaging close-quarters fights against friends and random people alike, then this game is definitely worth the purchase.
