Ready, sprout, grow!

A peek into our school’s Gardening Club

The Gardening Club has taken root. It is a place for plant enthusiasts to grow together in more ways than one.

Senior Sebastian Vera shows of the Garden Club’s decorated door for the holidays.

“Personally, I enjoy the freedom of being outside, and watching plants grow from a seed to a usable food source,” said club advisor Ms. Tammy Young. “As the club sponsor, I love watching the wonder and excitement of young adults as they learn to look at their environment from a totally different perspective.”

The plants grown by the Gardening Club are widely diverse and change with the season. Currently they are growing peas, broccoli, and kale. In the future, they will be planting various types of lettuce, onions, and arugula, as well as plants like thyme and other herbs.

If you think gardening is only about the plants, then this club will ex-seed your expectations.

The Gardening Club was growing broccoli, but something happened to the leaves and they had to pull it up.

“It’s very interesting to learn about plants, like cultural plants, and it’s also enjoyable to hang out with my friends who enjoy gardening,” said junior and Garden Club president Lazaro Virata. “I’ve had a connection with gardening from a very young age, my relatives have had a garden for a long time, so I’m connected with gardening and I wanted to share with my community.”

There are also unbe-leaf-able benefits to picking up gardening as a hobby. Gardening can be pea-ceful and fulfilling, while also allowing people to enjoy the outdoors and providing physical activity.

“It’s pretty therapeutic, and when you have friends out here it makes it fun,” said senior Garden Club member Trent McGarrigle

The club poses for a picture just before the holidays while they were doing door decorating.

The Gardening Club meets after school on Thursdays. There are currently around 20 regular members. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in joining the club, The general assembly meets every Thursday in the school cafeteria at 2:15 and they usually finish their work in the garden between 3-3:30.

It’s thyme to branch out and join this rose-merry group!

One day you will look back and see that all along you were blooming.
