Review of the album GHOST by Summrs

Kaden LeRoy, Staff Writer

I, and many others, have been big fans of Summrs for a little while now, and he recently dropped his newest album GHOST. In my opinion, the release of this new album was lackluster and honestly disappointing. Compared to his previous music, the songs on GHOST are quite repetitive and are missing any entertaining factors; instead, they’re just kind of bland.

Dukesturr on rateyourmusic.com explained it well when they said, “Summrs does not realize that and does not even bother experimenting or doing something original with the formula, the beats here are neither pretty nor floaty nor hype nor danceable nor memorable nor fun nor inventive nor creative nor enthusiastic nor soulful nor enjoyable in any way, his vocals are not interesting, his hooks are not catchy, and his lyrics are as empty as ever.”

A significant amount of the album is considered pointless filler, some reviewers even saying that Summrs has finally fallen off or has “fallen for the trap” of getting huge earnings. Most reviewers on album review sites like rateyourmusic.com think the album has a few decent hits, but those few are far between and sandwiched by a surplus of filler tracks.

“I think GHOST was more a filler tape for Rino (Summrs); he promised his fans five albums this year, making this one the second. I think it was rushed and Rino was more focused on meeting his quota,” says senior Jordan Barté, a hardcore Summrs fan.

Considering this is only the second album of his plan to release five in one year, these next albums are looking bleak. That being said, there are a couple of better songs on the album that are worth listening to; the top three being “Devil On My Back,” “Like Woah,” and “Shake It.” Summrs is clearly capable of making bangers, as seen by the top tracks on GHOST, but the pressure of having to make five albums in one year seems to be cramping his style.

Despite the sizable disappointment that GHOST has brought to his fans, this has not been a pattern for Summrs. Rino’s last two albums, Fallen Raven (2022) and Stuck In My Ways (2023), were rated above average and were appreciated for their versatility and quality. Therefore, despite the impression that GHOST left on how the rest of the year might turn out for him, there is still hope that Summrs will crank out some fire tracks.

Barté is also hopeful.

“Although this wasn’t top tier I still think Summrs can put out better in the future,” said Barté.
