Rho Kappa is a social studies honor society co-sponsored by Mrs. Jennifer Mechling and Mr. Mr. Paul Xenakis in Room 227. The first week of October, Rho Kappa held an election for various officer positions. Now that the newly elected officers have settled into their positions, it’s time to introduce them:
President – Savannah Welge
Q: What made you decide to become an officer?
I’ve always loved social studies and when I got the chance to be Secretary last year, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up! I wanted to run for President this year because of how much I love Rho Kappa. It’s such a great community, and being in a club with others who feel the same way that I do about social studies is incredibly refreshing.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Rho Kappa?
The community. We all have a mutual love for social studies, and I love being able to share and talk about it with others.
Q: If you could attend any historical event, what would it be and why?
Is joining Mr. Peabody and Sherman an option?
Q: How would you describe Rho Kappa in one sentence?
An intellectual group of people who love social studies.
Vice President – Jacinto Hunter
Q: What made you decide to become an officer?
I wanted to be more involved at the school, and Keven Mazuera-Caro inspired me to specifically run for Vice President of something when he ran for Vice President of the entirety of the Senior Class of 2024.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Rho Kappa?
I’m a really big fan of my friends who are also members of Rho Kappa so that’s my favorite aspect right now, but once we actually start doing things maybe one of those would become my favorite.
Q: If you could attend any historical event, what would it be and why?
I would enjoy a visit to medieval Europe. I find the time period extremely fascinating with its factions, cultures, and technologies (or lack thereof), but I do recognize that it was miserable to live through no matter who you were.
Q: How would you describe Rho Kappa in one sentence?
At its core, Rho Kappa is a place where you can spend time after school with like-minded friends and peers, engaging in a shared love of social studies.
Treasurer – Aliyah Pitts
Q: What made you decide to become an officer?
Because of my involvement in the club last year, I thought that I could help out this year.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Rho Kappa?
I love that everyone here can be their authentic history geek and won’t be judged.
Q: If you could attend any historical event, what would it be and why?
Death/resurrection of Jesus because it is very influential in my life.

A hidden gem that more people should know about.
Secretary – Sadie Clifford
Q: What made you decide to become an officer?
I liked what Rho Kappa stood for and liked the people in it so I wanted to be more a part of it.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Rho Kappa?
The community and sense of belonging.
Q: If you could attend any historical event, what would it be and why?
I would probably pick the moon landing in 1969 because I think that was an integral part of our history and it influenced the world. I would want to be there to see how everyone reacted in real time and react to it myself.
Q: How would you describe Rho Kappa in one sentence?
Rho Kappa is a place where people can find others that have the same interests as them and they have found a community to be a part of.
Historian – Annalee Barton
Q: What made you decide to become an officer?
I wanted to experience a position in the decision making processes as part of a club or team. I decided to be the “scrapbook” historian because I enjoy capturing events in the moment with my own artistic abilities!
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Rho Kappa?
My favorite aspect of Rho Kappa is that like-minded students passionate about history get to come together and reach towards the community!
Q: If you could attend any historical event, what would it be and why?
If I could attend any historical event it would be the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920’s considering my love for the arts! I would have loved to see the birth of jazz music and jazz dance (my favorite dance genre to perform). I am aware of all the unfortunate events happening then, but I would sure love to experience the life of the cities and parties.
Q: How would you describe Rho Kappa in one sentence?
Rho Kappa is an alliance of history enthusiasts wanting to make a difference.
