As many seniors have seen in their inboxes, college application season is well underway. For those who are on the path to a college or university, a great resource is available through the Access College Foundation, and she would love to meet with you. Our College Access Advisor is Ms. Akeda Hunter.
Hunter is originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, but she moved around a lot, between Portsmouth, Massachusetts, [and] Jersey “mostly.” It is her second year at Salem.
Q: Why did you become a college advisor?
A: I became a college advisor because when I went to college and [when I was] looking for colleges I knew I wanted to work with high schoolers. Y’know, time was hard and I hated high school to be fully honest. I was looking for opportunities when I graduated from school and I had the opportunity to work with College Advising Corp. in Boston, so I worked with Boston Public Schools students. It was just a really cool opportunity to be able to kinda help people figure out how to do the process…be the person I didn’t have.
Q: What is your favorite part about being our college advisor?
A: To be fully honest, meeting with students and sitting in [my office]. Even on days where I’m really busy y’all are really cool and y’all give me a lot of energy!
Q: What are some of your responsibilities as a college advisor?
A: Making sure that y’all have a plan for when you graduate and if there’s any amount of money that y’all can have and/or fill out forms to find. There’s a lot more that I do, but my main pieces are just helping out with applications…anything that goes into the planning process and the financial process.
Q: What students do you work with?
A: I work with all 9-12 grade students. I don’t just work with 12th grade students like most people think.
Q: What is one thing you want students to know prior to meeting with you?
A: Everything that happens within this space is confidential and my main intent is to meet you where you are, wherever that is. We go at your pace so come as you are.
