The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is a program where students go to Tidewater Community College to learn about things like IT, Cyber Foundations, and Network Administration. This program provides insight into the real world and helps get students ready for careers in technology.
It is freshman Gauge Mcleod’s first year at ATC.
“I think ATC has had a positive impact on me because it is a topic that I’m actually interested in [robotics],” said Mcleod.
Mcleod reported that he believes going to both Salem and ATC is manageable.
“I don’t have a hard time maintaining good grades because I have less classes overall. ATC takes up two class periods throughout the day, so I only have two classes actually at Salem,” said Mcleod.
Mcleod uses his free time on the bus ride between Salem and ATC to check his grades and to finish up work he needs to do.
Senior Tre Turner attends ATC for cybersecurity.
“I would say the only bad thing about ATC is that I only get to attend one lunch on half days,” said Turner. “The reason for this is because a lot of the clubs I participate in meet during one lunch, and, on top of that, it would be fun to be able to hangout with friends during this time as well.
Although Turner reported that going to the ATC program does have an effect on seeing his Salem friends, he also noted that he is able to meet new people from across Virginia Beach.
“I am taking the IT and Cyber Foundations courses,” said Turner. “The reason I wanted to take it is because you can get a lot of certifications for free and I am really interested in it.”
The ATC program is an amazing opportunity for students interested in STEM fields. Interested students can look into how to apply for next year by asking their guidance counselor.
