K-pop club is an up-and-coming club founded by juniors Lacy Capistrano, Kiersten Francisco, and Tia Betiong and sponsored by social studies teacher Mrs. Kimberly Rowe.
“It’s cool to see people bond over something as broad as K-pop,” said Francisco. “You don’t need to be a hardcore K-pop fan, and you don’t need to like Korean media or fit in with everyone else at all to be part of the club. It’s just a chill place to relax and hang out with friends.”
K-pop club is a safe space for people with common interests to come out of their shell.
“My main reason for even starting the club was to give people a safe community where they can feel comfortable talking about their interests,” said Capistrano. “I want this to be a community where everyone can put in input and participate as much [or] little as they want.”
Clubs like this can help members feel like they have a space where they belong.
“As someone who wasn’t very social, especially coming into high school, I think it’s really important to help others feel like they have some place to belong and know that feeling of relief when you’re around people that have the same interests as you,” said Franscisco.
Being comfortable with your surroundings gives you the chance to be confident in the things that you do. The people in K-pop club encourage ambition and confidence, giving no mind to who may see or judge.
“The confidence that the students in K-pop club show in each meeting has to be one thing that stands out the most [about] the club,” said Rowe. “It’s not everyday you see kids this confident, especially not in the halls.”
K-pop club is a great environment to seek out if you are looking for an energy boost.
“The energy of everyone really makes sponsoring K-pop club worth it,” said Rowe. “I look forward to seeing kids enjoy themselves over a common interest.”
For those interested, K-pop club is hosted in room 229 on Wednesdays or Fridays during one lunch. For more information on when each meeting takes place, Rowe puts out a message a week ahead of time on the morning announcements.
