There are many groups and activities on campus, including K-pop club, film club, and even D&D club. When it comes to music groups, the options are just as broad: vocal, orchestra, band, Jazz Club, Salem Select, and, Madrigals.
Madrigals is a choir group of 13 students of all grade levels led by Mrs. Lynne German. They meet during first block on A days. Madrigals is a vocal community that has been active since 1997.
“I joined Madrigals because I wanted to get more involved in Salem and choir,” said junior Izzy Nowlan.
In this group, students get to learn music in different languages, different parts, and from different time periods.
“I am hoping to strengthen my sight reading and better my performance choral skills,” said Nowlan.
Nowlan is a newcomer to the Madrigals, but is not new to the music scene. She not only is the lead singer for her band, Total Luminosity, but also attended Governor School of the Arts last year.
Madrigals consists of a variety of confident individuals looking to get involved. Madrigals isn’t just singing for two hours a day either. They have fun times as well, such as competitions and field trips. They take an annual trip to Busch Gardens where they spend a whole day during the spring hanging out and having fun. They recently visited Ocracoke Island to perform for the people residing there.
“I’ve had a positive experience in Madrigals so far. I love the people I’m around; everyone is so kind, amazing, and creative, and German is a wonderful teacher,” said junior Lacy Capistrano.
Capistrano is also in her own band and loves to sing on a regular basis, even when not in class. This community of singers is like a family and tries its best to create a safe, positive environment for anyone interested.
“We’re like a big family. Everyone gets along [and] everyone is so talented and wonderful. Nobody fights; there’s never a dull moment in Madrigals,” said Capistrano.
The Madrigals are also extremely close with German, who they appreciate and hold in high regard. The Madrigals have performed at the Oceanfront, Ocracoke Island, elementary and middle schools in the area, our pep rallies, the Winter Showcase, and our graduation ceremonies, just to name a few.
They currently have one bass, one tenor, five altos, and six sopranos! Most of the Madrigal girls also sing for Salem Select.
At the end of the day, the Madrigals have gone out of their way to create a welcoming community for each other. Keep an ear out for them at upcoming events.
