Mr. George Coker is one of two new assistant principals. While Coker may be new to Salem, he is an experienced educator.
“I taught at Green Run as a Math and Physics teacher before I helped open Green Run Collegiate as a faculty member,” said Coker. “I have taught many different courses, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate.”
After spending quite a bit of time in education as a teacher himself, Coker took his passion for mathematics a step further and acted as the School District’s Coordinator of Mathematics for High Schools for six years.
“As the Mathematics Coordinator, I spent over half my time moving between the high schools while working with teachers and students to improve mathematics instruction,” said Coker.
During these first two months of the new school year, Coker has been warmly welcomed by our faculty and students, who he credits for the uniqueness of Salem’s creative atmosphere.
“I love the vibe! I love the focus on “LEAD-ing” like a SunDevil. From the VPAA to the sports teams or clubs, I see students engaged in what they love to do!” said Coker.
Mr. Greg Moxley, a returning Assistant Principal, is enjoying getting to work with Coker.
“Mr. Coker and I went to graduate school together, so we’ve known each other for a long time. We click really well,” said Moxley.
Dr. Dana Cho, another new assistant principal this year, also highlights Coker’s welcoming personability.
“To describe Mr. Coker in one word, I’d call him flexible,” said Cho. “He adapts to everyone well.”
Coker was already familiar with Salem before being employed here. Having worked with the math team for the last six years, he would often get to visit Salem for special events.
“I love going to sporting events, cheering on the SunDevils, and meeting students in capacities outside of the four walls of our building,” said Coker. “I was lucky that Salem chose me!”
Now that he’s joined the administration, he’s looking forward to becoming even more involved. Specifically, he’s expressed interest in attending a few of the Tabletop Gaming Club meetings.
“I love playing tabletop and video games whenever I get the chance; from DnD to PS5, I will play almost anything!” said Coker.
Coker’s enthusiasm is clear.
“Coker… he’s really easy to get along with, he has a good sense of humor, and he’s not afraid to engage with people,” said Moxley.
Coker is a valuable addition to Salem. Don’t hesitate to say hi and welcome him if you see him in the hallway.
