Winter Sports are right around the corner and students are lining up to see what’s in store for this season. From boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball to gymnastics, this season is sure to bring excitement.
Tryouts were held from the 6th to the 13th of November. Some students had high expectations, while others were more apprehensive.
“My brothers told me they think I’ll make the team because most of the current members are seniors, but I have my doubts,” said freshman Amaya Gonzalez Lozada, who tried out for the gymnastics team.
Student-athletes were training hard for all the sports. With conditioning being offered to students interested in trying out for teams, many chose to take advantage of this opportunity.
“I did conditioning and it definitely helped me out, but now that I’ve done tryouts, I think conditioning was a lot easier,” said freshman Lily Bialorucki, who tried out for the swim team. “Swimming, like any sport, is physically demanding, so it’s important to do the little things like conditioning to help prepare you as an athlete.”
The tryout process was different for each sport. However, regardless of sport, students are usually assessed by the team’s coach(es) based on their performance, so it was important to have a positive attitude and give their all at tryouts.
Both Bialorucki and Gonzalez have been pursuing their sport for many years, but both are new to high school. Sports have been seen as an outlet for people to reduce stress, improve focus, and to stay healthy/become healthier.
“I’m fully dedicated to my sport. I’ve played many other sports in search of one that would stick but only grew to love [gymnastics] most of all,” said junior gymnastics captain Amelia Hayes. “I’ve competed in gymnastics for almost seven years now, and it’s left me unable to imagine not doing it.”
Sports can hold a great deal of importance in students’ lives. They can also open up opportunities for students interested in playing for college or professionally.
This season’s games will began on November 27th with boys’ JV basketball at 5:30 p.m. and girls’ JV at 7 p.m. Both were home games against Bayside High School.
Come out and support your peers the rest of this season in basketball, wrestling, indoor track, swimming, and gymnastics in the student section!
