Pembroke Mall is currently under deconstruction, with the intention of repurposing the space into a new hotel, a senior living community, and apartments.
S.B Ballard Construction Company has already constructed one of the new apartment buildings. Some staff are sad to see it go.
“It makes me sad that the mall is being demolished,” said permanent sub Mrs. Hope Costanza. “Although I stopped shopping there, it is still sad to see malls and many brick-and -mortar stores going out of business.”
Biology teacher Carol Macdonald is also sad to see it go.
“I remember Pembroke Mall and the Orange Julius there. I grew up in College Park so we would go to Military Circle then Greenbrier Mall in later years. No other mall had an Orange Julius and it was a treat for me,” said Macdonald.
Most students we talked to never frequented Pembroke and aren’t impacted by the change.
“As long as Greenbrier, Patrick Henry, or Lynnhaven doesn’t get demolished, I do not care about Pembroke,” said sophomore Jahriq Holloman.
The new development is scheduled to be completed in 2027. People will have access to a variety of new stores in addition to restaurants, the senior living community, and apartments.
Stores like DSW, Nordstrom Rack Room, Target, Bahama Breeze, Old Navy, and other exterior stores are remaining open during the construction process.
As the inside of Pembroke is going through demolition, shoppers are still welcome to shop around Pembroke square and Town Center.
