Past generations dreamed of flying cars, robots, and space travel in the future, but they likely never would have predicted that the trendy tech and tastes of the 2020’s would be JNCO jeans, CDs, and cassettes.
It seems as though all things old are making a big comeback.
“Totally, CDs, cassettes, vinyl, any music media, and baggy pants too [are making a comeback],” said junior Marco Rodriquez. “I engage with a lot [of older trends] without knowing. CDs kind of, clothing definitely, music, like, the artists. Clothing and music are probably the biggest ones.”
Rodriquez isn’t alone in that sentiment. Other students agree that there is a resurgence in popular styles and tech of the past.
“Oh for sure, like 90’s fashion, 90’s music, 80’s technology like cassettes. Also older stuff like vinyls and CDs,” said sophomore Alaina Coyle.
However, the question remains: why? What’s causing this surge in popularity of former fashions amongst today’s teens?
“I do notice that a lot of things that go out of style come back, especially makeup trends,” said senior Stella Kaufman. “A lot of people bring back old stuff because they’re inspired.”
Others have a different perspective on why these styles are making a comeback.
“[I think it’s about] longing for a better time,” said Rodriquez. “Well, I mean, back in the day people always brought back the past for their trends, but nowadays it’s just straight up from the past, like, people took from the 90s, 80s, maybe 70s . What’s the driving force? The new generation and the ability to see into the past with new technology.”
Coyle has another explanation for the phenomenon.
“Trend cycling and also because it looks good,” said Coyle. “And parental influence.”
There’s quite a few possible reasons for the return of styles and tech from the past, but one thing is for certain: they’re back.
