One Lunch, originally introduced before COVID-19, is something that students have come to look forward to during the school day.
Because students are allowed to eat in various areas around the school there is enough space to accommodate everyone at one time. Having 40 minutes also allows students to do more than just eat. They can also receive extra assistance from teachers during office hours, visit the library for peace and quiet, use the gym, and/or spend time with their friends.
“One lunch gives me more time to finish my lunch because I get 40 minutes to eat and socialize, it balances out with each other,” said sophomore Logan Smith
That being said, One Lunch is a privilege, not a right. Our current juniors and seniors learned this in years past when One Lunch was taken away due to inappropriate behavior.
“When we found out we lost one lunch, the crowd reaction was not happy,” said junior Chloe Hutchison. “Everyone was very upset, not only did we lose the chance to socialize with our friends, we also lost our chance to get help with school work.”
Students must continue to be on their best behavior if we want to keep One Lunch.
“Salem’s students work hard to sustain a culture of excellence,” said AP Euro Teacher Paul Xenakis. “In the past, some students have allowed themselves to get distracted from this focus, and have instead contributed to conditions that were dangerous or disruptive.”
SunDevils are expected to uphold certain standards, and teachers are on the lookout for such behavior during One Lunch. Make them proud, follow the L.E.A.D. code of conduct, and enjoy One Lunch!
