Claire Cottrill, known professionally as Clairo, recently released a new album titled “Charm.” The album shows her evolution as an artist while maintaining her unique sound. With a mix of ethereal melodies and introspective lyrics, the album offers refined production that reflects her growth. I give this album a 9.5 out of 10 and rank it as the second-best of all her work. Each track on “Charm” blends vulnerability and sophistication, making it a remarkable addition to today’s music landscape.
“Charm” is Clairo’s second-best album as it strikes a perfect balance between novelty and familiarity. The production quality is top-notch, with lush, layered instrumentals that complement her soothing vocals. The lyrical content delves deeply into personal and relatable topics, showcasing her maturity and growth as a songwriter. The album includes a variety of musical styles, from dreamy pop to more experimental tracks.
Furthermore, “Charm” differs from Clairo’s previous albums by having a more refined and coherent sound. While her early work often adopted a lo-fi pop aesthetic, “Charm” moves into more sophisticated production territory. The album features richer instrumentation and more complex arrangements, giving it a fuller, more dynamic sound. Compared to her debut album “Immunity,” which has a raw, intimate feel, and “Sling,” which leans towards a folk-inspired vibe, “Charm” seamlessly blends these elements while introducing new sonic textures that highlight her artistic evolution.
My three favorite songs on the album are “Slow Dance,” “Juna,” and “Glory of the Snow.” These songs are famous for many reasons. “Slow Dance” has this dreamy, gentle vibe that really draws you in and makes you feel the emotions behind the song. “Juna” is unique because it blends some aspects of the lofi pop aesthetic of some of her other songs, while taking a slower turn that allows it to fit into the album. “Glory of the Snow” is one of my favorite songs in general because it’s a very smooth, upbeat song that’s the perfect length and I personally love driving to this song.
