I’m addicted to cookies. I’m in love with chocolate chip cookies, snickerdoodles, peanut butter blossoms, and anything with oatmeal. I feel the need to taste just about every cookie I come across. This habit is undeniably bad for my health, putting me at risk for diabetes and obesity. In a search for healthier desserts, my mother and I have recently come across a recipe for a cookie that is actually good for your health and happens to only have two ingredients.
Within the past couple of weeks, we have modified the recipe and made these cookies at least five times. They have provided the perfect, healthy alternative for my usual afternoon sweet treat. The only two ingredients in these “cookies” are ripe bananas and oats, so they also make the perfect breakfast before school.
The first time I tried this recipe, I fell in love with it. It took less than 20 minutes to make them, and it was easy to find the ingredients in our pantry. Since my mom and I didn’t add anything other than bananas and oats, it was definitely the healthiest version; however, it was also the blandest. It didn’t taste like a real cookie but more like a really good bowl of oats in solid form. The texture, though, was so perfect that I didn’t particularly care how healthy it tasted. The oats provided crunch while the bananas balanced them with the ideal amount of chewiness.
Within two days, I had to make them again. To try to make them taste more like real cookies, we added vanilla extract and cinnamon. They still didn’t taste like cookies, but they were a bit more flavorful than before.
A week later, I craved the cookies once again. I was determined to make them perfect, but I was without my mom’s assistance. Not really sure what the exact recipe was, I tried to use my memory. I added cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and a wealth of chocolate chips. I forgot how long they needed to be in the oven and undercooked them by about five minutes. They had no crunch to them and I needed to pick them apart instead of eating them whole, but that was entirely my own fault. Nonetheless, they tasted better than ever.
In the future, I plan on putting these cookies into bags and eating them for a quick breakfast as often as I can. Do these healthy cookies taste like real cookies? Not even close, but these globs of oats are just about the best fake cookies I have ever had.
