In September of 2024, international pop star Sabrina Carpenter set foot on her worldwide tour named after her most recent album Short N’ Sweet. In the final act of the tour, Carpenter wears a blue and silver sparkling set that inspired me to recreate it. Here are my steps on how I did so.
Materials needed:
- Thread
- 2 Yards of Light Blue Fabric
- 1 Yard of White Sequin Fabric
- 1 6 in. Light Blue Zipper
- 2 packs of ss20 rhinestones
- Fabric Scissors
- Rhinestone Glue
- Wax Pencil
Measurements needed:
- Bust to Hip length
- Under arm to hip length
- Around the Bust.
- Full Waist
The Top:
To start drafting the top by dividing your bust measurement by 4. My bust measurement was 42 so I ended up with 10.5. Draw a horizontal line with the exact number you got for me it would be 10.5. On the end of the line draw your bust to hip length line so the horizontal line is in the center. On the other end do the same with the Under arm to hip length. Like this:
From there, you want to connect both vertical lines. For the top, you want to connect them with an arch. For the bottom, make the arch so it creates a point at the bust to hip length line.
To start drafting back part of the top you want to take that same measurement for your horizontal line before and draw it. Following that you will need to draw an arch so the top sort of peaks. Draw that same one inch line for silver lining, cut and trace the pattern onto fabric.
From there cut apart the separate pieces. Place the template made on the fold of the fabric, trace it, and cut it out. Once your pieces are cut out, place the fabric so the good sides are facing inside. You then will need to sew the pieces together leaving half an inch of seam allowance.
Once all your pieces are sewn together, hem all the exposed ends to make sure the fabric doesn’t fray.
Bottoms:
To create the skirt bit of the outfit you will need to start with your full waist measurement. Take that measurement and multiply it by 4. Once you’ve done that you’re going to need to divide it by 6.28 creating a radius. For example, my waist measurement is 34 inches so it’d be 34 x 4/ 6.28= 21.656.
Then, place your measuring tape in the corner of the fabric and make a half circle that is your number away from the corner.
From there, you want to go back and measure how long you want the skirt. For me, my skirt measured to be about 10 inches long. You’re going to draw another semi-circle stemming from the first that measures about 10 inches. Connect those lines so it looks like the diagram before and cut the template. Then take one inch from the inside like you did inside.
Trace the pattern onto the fabrics and cut. From there sew the silver lining and the rest of the piece together.
OPTIONAL: Before you start to rhinestone you want to iron the top and the bottom so the fabric lays the way you want it to. This is what it should look like:
Rhinestoning:
To start rhinestoning, slide a barrier inside of the top/ skirt to make sure the glue doesn’t transfer to the other side. This barrier could be a piece of cardboard, an old book, etc. (as long as it protects the inside of the fabric).
Dump a small amount of your stones into a small container. Take your glue and do a small increment of glue dots onto the fabric. I typically do increments of seven to ten dots before using my wax pencil to place each rhinestone. Complete this until your top and skirt are completely done. Your finished product should look like this:
