Jane Remover, also known as Leroy, Venturing, and many other pseudonyms over the years has grown into somewhat of an underground sensation in the electronic, indie rock, and many other music communities. Remover, the 21-year-old genre-bending artist, has a tight work ethic with balancing releasing two albums, six singles, two remix tracks, and monthly hour-long DJ sets in about a year.
Remover has never had a distinct sound. Her early work included vocalizing in low, deep tones over fast and electronic, trap, and breakbeats.
Remover has had a history of changing her sound; because of this, every recent single has been a big change from her recent full-length, we expect her third album to have a whole new genre shift.
On April 12, 2024, artist Tinashe released her smash hit, “Nasty” charting at 69 on the Billboard Hot 100. Remover released a glitchy dance remix of this song (her first release since Census Designated under her label) on June 18, 2024.
On October 24, 2024, Remover released her noisy trap remix of Frost Children and Danny Brown’s summer single, “Shake It Like A.” Both of these songs take inspiration from different pop sub-genres including dance-pop, electropop, hyperpop, etc. With the more recent of the two remixes, I hear a lot of inspiration from the late hyperpop pioneer Sophie.
As much as I enjoy both of these remixes, I think that the “Nasty” remix shows too little too soon and leaves me wanting more.
Remover, while dipping her toes into the waters of various genres, also had a variety of pseudonyms she’s released music under. One of the only active accounts she releases under, Venturing, is supposed to be reminiscent of a 90s rock band.
The songs “Sister” released on September 26, 2024, and “Halloween” released on October 31, 2024, feature some of Remover’s rawest vocals over production with grunge-tinged guitars and soft rock inspirations. “Sister” is one of the best lyrical pieces I have heard from Remover with its vocals packed with emotions. “Halloween” has not been a favorite of mine, sounding like a demo because of every sound on the song blending in with each other.
Following the announcement of her joining JPEGMAFIA on tour, Remover decided to release a new single “Flash in the Pan” with its B-side, “Dream Sequence.”
The main track in the double-single “Flash in the Pan” builds off of her sophomore album with its dark and heavy guitars over a drill beat that actually samples her own “Holding a Leech” off of Census Designated.
This track is such a fresh sound to her large musical palette. The B-side, “Dream Sequence,” is almost a direct follow-up to Census Designated as it is a dreamy, guitar-heavy rock track with a 90s grunge feel.
While I feel this track is a little less interesting because of its familiarity with its inspirations, it is a very sweet tune to accompany her discography.
Saving the best for last, Remover’s newest double single released under her label, “Magic I Want U” and “How To Teleport” released on September 4, 2024, have had not only the catchiest tunes to them but the best and most interesting production to each.
All in all, Remover has gone 8 for 8 with her recent singles and remixes. Not only am I excited to see what she does with her upcoming full-length project, but I am anxiously awaiting to see what genre shift she will take with her new music.
