Christmas is a worldwide holiday celebrated on the 25th of December. In addition to being a religious holiday, Christmas is increasingly celebrated by families of both religious/non-religious backgrounds. According to Britannica, beginning in the “early 20th century, Christmas has been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts.”
“To me, Christmas is more than just a holiday; it’s a celebration of connection, love, and shared happiness. It’s about gathering with family and loved ones, cherishing traditions, and creating memories that warm the heart long after the season ends,” said English teacher Rylee Toler. “Christmas embodies the spirit of giving—not just in gifts, but in time, kindness, and understanding. It’s a reminder of the importance of being present for one another, expressing gratitude, and finding joy in the simple moments, like laughter around the dinner table or the glow of a shared story by the tree.”
In addition to candy canes, presents, and family time, this holiday season is marked by the longest break Virginia Beach City Public Schools has seen in recent memory.
“I’m looking forward to Christmas because there will be no school for two weeks,” said junior Devin Jiang.
Library Media Specialist Ms. Stephanie Young is looking forward to having the time to spend with friends and family.
“Christmas is a time of togetherness. I love spending quality time with family and friends and engaging in fun holiday activities together,” said Young.
People celebrate Christmas in various ways with various traditions.
“For me, Christmas represents love in its purest form: the unconditional kind that brings families closer, builds friendships, and fosters a sense of belonging,” said Toler “It’s about taking the time to slow down, reflect on what truly matters, and share that feeling of warmth and happiness with others. At its core, Christmas is a reminder that love and togetherness are the greatest gifts we can give and receive.”
