On November 22nd, Maelstrom hosted their semi-annual open mic with an amazing array of acts including juggling, singing, and more.
Open Mic is an event open for students and staff to showcase their talents and have fun. Teacher performances featured singing talents Alicia Britton, Rylee Toler, and Mary Stevenson.
“I used to sing in the choir in high school, and I was [the] lead in plays. [I was in] a Little Shop of Horrors [and] Grease,” said Britton.
Theater teacher John Moss had a compelling interaction with the crowd. Moss recited an original, heartfelt piece regarding his late friend. In between sets, history teacher Raymond Obispo, the sponsor of Maelstrom, told witty dad jokes that kept the show running with little to no awkward silence.
Maelstrom’s house band, Lunar Eclipse, consisting of sophomore Christopher Abbott on drums, Cristobal on bass, with senior Brody Collins and senior Angel Alvarez on guitar, and senior Izzy Nowland on vocals, closed the night out with “Luna” by The Smashing Pumpkins.
“Maelstrom serves two purposes,” said Obispo. “One, It’s a fundraiser for the publication of the literary and arts magazine. Two, It serves to build community for the school as it spotlights artistic talent in a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere.”
Performing in front of a live audience can be daunting at first; however, Maelstrom’s Open Mic delivered a warm, welcoming atmosphere that encouraged even the most apprehensive of artists.
“Open mic is open to all,” said Obispo. “However, performer pieces need to attend an informational meeting and have pieces that are school appropriate.”
This year’s fall Open Mic did not disappoint. If you’re looking for an easy-going, fun way to express yourself and/or display a talent, consider performing in and/or attending Maelstrom’s Spring Open Mic!
