Creative Writing Club allows students to write freely on their own terms, gives them a different perspective of writing, and opens their minds to many different possibilities and genres of writing.
“Creative Writing Club is a great space to freely write and collaborate with like-minded classmates. It’s like a little family here!” said junior Taylor Hitt.
English teacher Rylee Toler has wanted to get a Creative Writing class going at Salem for a while now, and one step forward to making that happen was starting a club. When fellow English Teacher Layla Barnes showed interest in the club they joined forces.
“I wanted to get involved with starting the Creative Writing Club with Ms. Toler because creative writing has always been my passion,” said English teacher Ms. Layla Barnes. “I was an English major with a concentration in creative writing in college. I wanted to bring back something that I appreciated as a student when I was here at Salem.”
The Creative Writing club has meetings during the first half of one lunch on Wednesdays and after school on Mondays. Any student can join just by showing up to a meetings. The Creative Writing club is an informal club, if students can’t commit to making every single meeting, just show up whenever you’re available.

“I like creative writing because it is genuinely fun to let my mind run wild and see the images that come up in my mind,” said freshman Janniston Pattee. “The best part is seeing how far my creativity can pull me when writing.”
This club would be beneficial to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills, whether creative or academic. Writing is a skill, and the more you practice, the more you improve. This club will be the most beneficial to those who want to pursue creative writing, either seriously or as a hobby, because they will continue to improve their skills as writers.
“Creative writing will help me for a college entry because they need a story,” said freshmen Pattee.
This Club also has amazing contest opportunities for writers so their work can be published. Students have the opportunity to win awards and prizes, which are great resume items.

Creative Writing allows students to foster creativity, helping student writers sharpen their skills through the use of creativity in their minds. Students share why they like to write:
“I like to write because I like seeing my writing take a form of its own. It’s almost exciting to see my characters become their own and spur their personalities into something more real and different than I had ever expected,” said junior Taylor Hitt. “Creative Writing has helped me flex my creativity and become a better writer.”
“I like creative writing because it is genuinely fun to let my mind run wild and see the images that come up in my mind,” said freshman Janniston Pattee.
If you are interested in writing, join the Creative Writing Club. It is open to many new writers and their various ideas to manufacture the club to the best of their abilities. There is no commitment to come to a certain number of meetings, and the club does not force anyone to share their writing if they aren’t comfortable sharing yet.
