In the 1970s, frozen yogurt was introduced by an entrepreneur by the name of H.P. Hood. He originally classified it as “frogurt” and intended to create a healthier product that tasted similar to ice cream (I’d say he succeeded). According to McKinsey Insights, a 2019 survey found that seventy-six percent of people reported that frozen yogurt was tastier than ice cream.
Similar to ice cream, flavors like strawberry, chocolate, salted caramel, cotton candy, cookies and cream, coconut, and vanilla are included in various froyo shop flavors. However, frozen yogurt offers different nutritional benefits than ice cream. Cups of froyo contain fewer calories than ice cream and contain vitamins and minerals like B6, B12, calcium, and potassium. Additionally, if you want inclusions that are typically in ice cream (Oreos, strawberries, cookie dough, etc.), they are available as well!
Now that you know the froyo basics, let us dive into our fellow Sundevils’ preferences and recommendations!

junior Lindsey Haske: “I typically order from Sweet Frog. It used to be Skinny Dip until the one closest to me closed. Thankfully, I’m still able to get lemon and coconut, my favorite flavors. I like to add cookie dough bits as my topping.”
- Haske prefers ice cream over frozen yogurt
sophomore Chase Abulencia: “I go to either Skinny Dip or Sweet Frog, whichever is closer. They’re both delicious. I like to get chocolate and raspberry flavored yogurt with mini chocolate chips and marshmallows as my toppings. I honestly recommend any kind of fruit and chocolate combination for froyo, it’s really good.”
- Abulencia prefers frozen yogurt over ice cream
junior Angel Valle: “I haven’t gone in a really long time, but I remember it tasting good. If I went again, I would most likely go to Sweet Frog because it has a really nice atmosphere. Cookies and cream with crushed up Oreos would definitely be my go-to. Like I said, it has been a while, but I recommend any flavor with an Oreo topping.”
- Valle prefers ice cream over frozen yogurt
junior Lily Cooley: “Sweet frog is my go-to. I love fruity flavors, so I usually go for either strawberry, banana, or mango yogurt. Occasionally, I get the tart flavor. Regarding my toppings, I get strawberries, cheesecake bites, strawberry popping boba, fruity pebbles, mini mochi, and marshmallow drizzle. It is absolutely delicious every time.”
- Although Cooley loves her froyo order, she still prefers ice cream
While many continue to believe ice cream is better than frozen yogurt, it is hard to deny the delicious underdog. Show your local froyo spot some love for a promising purchase!
