Forever 21 is a large clothing store, known for its trendy, inexpensive clothing, but after 40 years of business in the United States, it’s coming to an end. Stores in other countries, including Canada, will remain open for now. Forever 21 is facing its second bankruptcy and potential shutdown throughout the United States because it struggled to keep up with rising costs and online shopping.
The first time Forever 21 filed for bankruptcy was in 2019 when the company lost 30% of its sales. As this is their second time in bankruptcy, Forever 21 was expected to close all 350 stores around the United States and Puerto Rico by May 1st.

“They are selling EVERYTHING! All appliances, storage cabinets, hangers, etc,” said sophomore John Diwa. “ I remember taking photos and they had wigs on the mannequins for 210 dollars.”
In today’s society, most people find online shopping more efficient than going to malls. Especially with online stores like SHEIN or TEMU, which sell the same items for a much cheaper price. Forever 21 has raised its prices immensely, and most people started to think it was not worth shopping there anymore, as they believe they can get better clothes for much better prices.
“It’s always unfortunate when people are laid off, retail shopping is not the same as how it used to be,” said a parent, Tiesha Hood. “With the internet, more options of stores, time constraints, and lower prices, I prefer to shop online.
According to Retail Dive, Forever 21’s operating company laid off nearly 700 employees, including over 350 at its Los Angeles headquarters, and as stores close, the number rises.
In 2017, Forever 21 faced lawsuits related to labor practices and accusations of copying designs. Their legal and financial troubles have only increased since then..
The Virginia Beach, Lynnhaven Mall store had massive sales as they tried to get rid of everything they could before closing.

Students and teachers have many opinions on how they feel about Forever 21 closing.
“I never shopped at Forever 21 and neither did my daughter, so I won’t miss it when it’s gone,” said chemistry teacher Elizabeth Dupont.
Although Forever 21 is closing in America, shoppers can still shop there out of the country, so be on the lookout next time you travel if you love their stores!
