Sienna Vera Cruz is a senior known for her hardworking nature and strong persona. She has made one of her biggest impacts on the school’s tennis team where she became the girls’ captain during her sophomore year.

“Sienna is a good fit for being the tennis team’s captain,” said senior Makaila Kincaid. “She is dedicated to the sport and is constantly keeps trying her best to improve her skills. She helps her teammates out and has a strong bond with them… I think she’s a great team captain and helps Salem’s tennis team thrive.”
While Kincaid is not on the tennis team, she has witnessed Vera Cruz’s relentless effort for many years, especially in tennis. It’s clear that Vera Cruz has honed this mentality.
“I have been playing tennis since the 5th grade. I’ve been playing it for so long because it grew on me and I enjoy playing it a lot, even if I have tough times,” said Vera Cruz.
Additionally, Vera Cruz’s dad, Kim Vera Cruz, has played a role in her experience with tennis throughout her life. Now, he is coaching the tennis team.
“His dad and brother in the Filipino community in Naples, Italy, got him into tennis,” said Vera Cruz. “My dad being the coach on the team is definitely interesting, but he does give some valuable input and advice. I know my teammates enjoy him there, too.”
Coach Kim is a very experienced tennis player and has helped his daughter become a stronger player. He has watched her abilities as a leader on and off the court grow as well.

“Yes, she is a good team captain,” said Coach Kim. “She portrays great sportsmanship and leads by example. Sienna is good at taking instructions and learns fast. [For tennis she puts in] 4-5 hours each week in the off-season; during [the season she puts in] 16 hours a week.”
Vera Cruz puts in a lot of effort and time into tennis. While she has had some personal setbacks, she is always a pillar of confidence and passion.
“I have struggled amplifying my voice and being confident in leading the team,” said Vera Cruz. “But I think my messages and my vibes are still well communicated to my teammates. We all love each other, and I love the tennis community.”

As she looks ahead to life beyond high school, Vera Cruz leaves behind more than a record of dedication—she leaves a legacy of leadership, perseverance, and heart. From her early days picking up a racket in fifth grade to leading Salem’s tennis team as captain, she has embodied commitment. Whether she’s motivating her teammates, learning from her father’s guidance, or pushing herself to improve, Vera Cruz’s passion for tennis continues to shine—a reminder that true strength comes from both skill and spirit.
