In addition to her many attributes as an English 10 and 11 teacher, and Class of 2027 Sponsor, Ms. Alicia Britton has a unique pet: Ziggy, the 32-year-old African Grey Parrot.

Britton and Ziggy have a history that dates back to Britton’s childhood.
“When I was 13, my grandmother’s friend Toni passed away. Toni owned the bird first and when she passed, my grandmother took Ziggy in,” said Britton. “I would visit my grandmother often and see Ziggy; I loved seeing and hearing him talk and whistle.”
As the years passed, Britton’s love for him only grew.
“I did not plan on taking him,” said Britton. “However, I fell in love with him over time and begged my mom to take him home with us. She agreed. He has been my pet now for 16 years.”

Parrots are not the most common pets, and students are often surprised when she tells them about him.
“I was quite surprised [when I first heard about Ziggy],” said senior Sydney Grady. “None of my previous teachers have ever had a pet that wasn’t a dog or cat.”
Britton frequently tells stories about the parrot’s activities.
“She talks a lot about him and obviously cares a lot about him,” said senior Andrew Rocks.
Grady, who was in Britton’s English 11 class last year, would love to meet Ziggy if she were given the opportunity.
“She often talks about Ziggy and all [of] his tomfoolery. It would be fun to see [him] in person,” said Grady.

An African Grey Parrot isn’t the only pet Britton has wanted.
“I really want a bulldog,” said Britton. “I love dogs; I would love an English or French bulldog.”
For now, the bird’s familiar chatter fills Britton’s home with comfort and routine, a reminder of their years spent together. While her students may change each year, her loyal feathered companion remains a constant.
