Oceanography teacher Carl Alberico is also the Girls’ Outdoor Track distance coach and doesn’t just teach his runners to run fast and set personal records. He teaches them to believe in themselves every step of the way.
“I want to teach runners the lessons I wish someone had shared with me when I first laced up my shoes,” said Alberico.
It is essential to put runners in the right mindset prior to a track meet as it helps them stay focused on the race.
“Depending on the athlete, it depends on the type of talk they get before the race because each athlete needs a different type of advice for what they need to focus on,” said Alberico.
Being a good coach means supporting your athletes on and off the field; Alberico exemplifies by giving advice to set them up for success.
“He supports the team by providing a good mentality, helping people work on their form, and keeping their mentalities right,” said junior Zyaire Crawford. “He is always reminding our teammates to keep pushing and ignore people who tell you otherwise.”
Alberico is proud of every one of his runners even when they do not set a personal record or come up short of their goals. He prides himself on knowing his players on and off the track.
“The moment my athlete reached the school’s two-mile track record filled me with pride like nothing else,” said Alberico.
The best part of being on track with a good coach is creating lasting memories for both athletes and coaches.
‘’My favorite memory was during one of my races when he shouted ‘“go Maddie go!”’ said junior Maddie Alberico, who is also Coach Alberico’s youngest daughter.
Every coach has their own story on why they coach students. Alberico wanted to be the person to inform athletes of what he wished he knew when he was their age.
“I became a coach to give athletes the information and opportunities that I never got when I was a young runner,” said Alberico.
Mr. Alberico isn’t just a coach; he helps students grow and succeed. Caring about him means caring about our school and the future of the students he supports.
