It is difficult to go a few minutes without hearing someone talk about Tik Tok or seeing people making Tik Toks, especially during lunch. Tik Tok is an app where users lip sync to songs, dance, or make 15- 60 second videos. Tik Tok was launched internationally in September 2017. By January of 2018, the TikTok app was one of the top ranking downloads in the App Store.

When the app first came out it, received a good deal of criticism and people didn’t take it seriously, but it now has more than 500 million active users. According to their website their company mission is “to capture and present the world’s creativity, knowledge, and precious life moments, directly from the mobile phone. TikTok enables everyone to be a creator, and encourages users to share their passion and creative expression through their videos.”

I was one of those people who hated on Tik Tok. Then I saw a video on Instagram about it and how people who downloaded it has a joke ended up making an account, liking the different videos, and then started making them themselves. This is exactly what happened with me. I got the app as a joke, ended up liking it, and now I go on the app everyday. Tik Tok is one of those apps that you don’t like at first, but then it grows on you. One day this week, according to my screen time data, I spent two hours and forty-four minutes on Tik Tok.

When I watch Tik Tok I don’t realize how long I am actually on the app and I’m not alone.

“Tik Tok is honestly one of the best things to happen since Vine. I’m high key addicted, I’ll go on the app with the intention to be only a few minutes, next thing I know it’s 3AM,” said senior Garrett Gray.
