Birds of Prey Review
Birds of Prey fails to impress
April 8, 2020
With the DC extended cinematic universe crumbling to pieces, many wonder where the company will take their movies to next. After making fans unhappy and failing at the box office with films like, Justice League and Batman V, Superman, DC made a successful attempt at redeeming themselves with the Joker even though it’s not connected to any of the prior movies. In hopes of continuing in the right direction, Birds of Prey was released on February 7th. Birds of Prey is a spinoff of Suicide Squad from 2016; it follows Harley Quinn’s story after her breakup with the Joker and during the fight with Blackmask, a notorious gang leader who wants Quinn dead.
Projections for the movie have been mixed, some believe that DC should give up on their cinematic universe and restart, while others are eager for DC to continue making films, giving the superhero company plenty of opportunities to get it right. The problem with DC films is their rush to put out these movies. I believe they have set priorities of money before quality, which is where they have failed. It’s almost as if they were trying to catch up to the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). The difference with the MCU is that they took their time with every film they released, whether it was filming, casting, editing, or creating storylines that all connected with each other even after 23 films.
The biggest question I had walking into the movie was, “Is this it, the film that will finally revive the DCEU?” Well, the answer was simple: no. The film failed in so many aspects. One of the only details I enjoyed was the performance from Margot Robbie; it was as if she was born to play the role. You could tell Robbie enjoyed playing this role. Along with her performance, the diversity in casting was something that did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated. The characters were anything but boring and all offered their own stories to present to the screen. With this being said, I would still consider the movie a major failure.
Birds of Prey was a complete mess of a story with cringe worthy choreographed fight scenes and a plot with too many rabbit holes. The film was laughable at times, but for all the wrong reasons. The intended humour flopped and so did the movie’s box office performance. I am sad to announce that DC has still not made a comeback.
