The Dutch mindset

Mr. Rudy Van Oekel brings Dutch perspective of camaraderie and kindness to SunDevils

Pre-COVID, SunDevils came to expect a good morning and a high five from economics and personal finance teacher, Mr. Rudy Van Oekel. Though most recognized for teaching students how to fill out tax forms and explaining the stock market, Van Oekel’s engagement with students outside of the classroom is what truly sets him apart as an educator.

“He connects with his students on a personal level in and out of the classroom,” said senior Amaris Felton. “That really made his class so engaging.”

Born in a country known for breeding the happiest people in the world, Van Oekel relishes the open, progressive culture of the Netherlands and still carries that attitude with him. One thing that sticks out about Holland is the teamwork mindset.

“We’re here to take care of each other, it’s not me, it’s us,” said Van Oekel. “I believe we should take care of each other. Not just family, but people in general.”

Van Oekel’s unique perspective is what students rely on when they’re in need of motivation, or even a reality check.

“[He] always gives great world advice,” said Felton. “He’s super caring and nice. He’s also very honest and will tell you what you need to hear in a positive way. He always pushes me, even now that I no longer have class with him, and it gives me the confidence I have today.”

Van Oekel encourages all of his students to get as involved as possible, and explore all opportunities that Salem provides. He exemplifies this himself by attending sports games, staying up to date with academy shows, and he even learned a dance with members of the cheerleading team last year!

Van Oekel’s main advice to students is to follow their passion.

“You can’t help it when you’re passionate about something,” said Van Oekel. “Find something you love to do and find out how to make money from it. It’s not all about money.”
