We have officially made it through one month of school, and with that, we are well into the fall sports season. The girls volleyball team, which consists of 11 team members and two managers, has been going strong with a 6-6 record.

“Being a part of the team has really brought out confidence in myself,” said senior Jaime Corley. “It’s made me more outgoing.”

Corley is new to Salem and the camaraderie between her and her teammates has helped her make new friends.

“Our team bonds so well together,” said senior Hannah Rollins.

Participating in a sport or supporting a team by attending games are great ways to come together as a community and uplift peers. Unfortunately, throughout this past year, the team has faced challenges because of COVID-19 restrictions.

“With a shortened season last year and a limited number of players, it has been difficult to recruit and build the younger players,” said Coach Helen Costulis. “This year we have focused on our 11 players and building their skills, but would love for more players to come out next year to try out.”

The limitations from the pandemic has left the team feeling the lack of support in the stands.

Corley said it feels like “we just haven’t gotten any recognition.”

It is not too late to support the team and attend volleyball games.

“We can always hand out extra tickets,” said Coach Costulis. “The team is much more energized when we have a supportive fan base.”

Rollins encourages fans to “Come to our games and cheer!”

The team has persevered despite COVID restrictions and has brought up their record immensely from last season.
