Luv 4 Rent

A Smino story

Christopher Bjorn Smith Jr., better known as Smino, is known for his smooth music with a hint of rap and this album is a manifestation of just that. With heavy hitters like: “No L’s, 90 Proof” (feat J.cole), “Pro Freak” (feat Doechii and Fatman Scoop), and “Matinee” (feat Kal Banx) I would say this is his second best work.

The way he harmonizes while still showing that he can rap continues to impress me. I feel like Smino is on track to be a very competitive artist and will soon take over the R&B game.

The album consists of enough new flows and range to make Smino standout. My only concern is that I feel like some songs could have been longer or left out and put into EPs. The album has enough features of new and old artists to keep the listener interested, while also having songs with just Smino that are enjoyable to listen to. Songs like “Pudgy” (featLil Uzi Vert) and “Curtains,” will most definitely be added to the family cookout playlist.

I feel like “Settle Down” featuring Cory Henry and Rayvn Lee could have been saved for maybe a deluxe. Cory Henry’s verse was almost perfect. The way he approached the track was heaven sent. My personal favorite track on the album is, “90 Proof” (feat J.cole). Hearing Smino and J.cole share the same track is always on point. They have been well connected since “Return Of the Dreamers” and there are hopes for Smino joining J.cole’s group Dreamville. The track is sampled from “E Ma S’eka” and the warm beat combined with J.Cole and Sminos lyrical skills is life changing.

I would give this album a four out of five. “ Luv 4 rent” is a beautiful album and Smino continues to show that he can produce consistent music while still challenging himself. The album has multiple features some that outshine Smino himself, but in the grand scheme of things it works out for the album.
