Q: What are you most excited about with your appointment as Salem’s principal?
A: I am excited to be returning to high school and most excited to be leading Salem next year.
Q: What will your main focus (or a couple of main focuses) be for our school?
A: Our work will continue with ensuring that all of our students are Future Ready. I’m looking forward to working with our staff in strengthening our support for each student, whether they plan to go to college, trade school, the military, or directly into the job force.
I want to learn and live all things Salem HS has to offer, so I’m looking forward to celebrating and supporting the strong tradition of achievement in academics, extracurricular activities, student leadership, and in the Visual and Performing Arts.
Q: Tell us about your prior experience in education. Where are you coming from? What did you teach when you were in the classroom?
A: I am a graduate of Lake Taylor HS in Norfolk and attended Old Dominion University where I studied history and political science. I graduated in 1995 with a degree in History/Secondary Education and started teaching social studies at Bayside HS. I taught World Geography and was later asked to teach World History II and AP European History as part of the BHS Health Sciences Academy until 2004.
Fun Fact:
I still keep in touch with many students from BHS, especially the Class of 2004, as my wife and I taught many of the same students. Some even attended our wedding ceremony in December 2003 and one even served as our nanny to our twins after she graduated from college.
I attended The George Washington University and earned a Masters in Arts in Education and Human Development (administration). I served as the administrative assistant at Kellam HS in 2005 and was selected to be an assistant principal at Kempsville HS that December. I was appointed principal of Independence MS in 2011 and later principal of Larkspur MS in 2018.
Q: Do you have any fun summer plans?
A: I hope to surf as much as possible and maybe play golf /mountain bike when there aren’t any waves! Otherwise, I don’t have plans for any big trips this summer.
Bonus questions:
Q: What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
A: Ben and Jerrys New York Super Fudge Chunk.
Q: If a theme song were to play as you entered the school what would it be?
A: Too many to think about but maybe “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers.
Q: What do you want students and staff to know about you?
A: I am here to serve and support you all. I keep an open door and will find time to sit down and talk. If there’s a concern, I will work to resolve the issue with the input of all involved. I may be quiet and reserved up front, but that’s because I’m watching, listening, and soaking it all in. I’ve heard only great things about Salem HS from parents and community members that I know and want to continue to build upon the many successes and achievements.
