The year 2023 has been eventful for the video game industry, and the time has come for the Game of the Year to be chosen.
The Game Awards, created in 2014 by video game journalist and television presenter Geoff Keighly, acts as the premier award show in the video game industry. Every year, The Game Awards allows gamers and critics to elect video games released throughout the year for various awards, the most prolific of which is Game of the Year. The award ceremony is always broadcast online on both YouTube and Twitch.
This year, six games were nominated for the title of Game of the Year:
- Alan Wake 2 (Remedy Entertainment)
- Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac Games)
- Resident Evil 4 Remake (Capcom)
- Super Mario Wonder (Nintendo)
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo)
Each of these titles had a good chance of winning, but the prime contenders were Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2. Both Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 were nominated for 8 out of the 31 award categories, earning more nominations than any other games this year.

- Best Narrative
- Best Score and Music
- Best Performance
- Best Community Support
- Best RPG
- Best Multiplayer
Alan Wake 2 was nominated for the following awards:
- Game of the Year
- Best Game Direction
- Best Narrative
- Best Art Direction
- Best Score and Music
- Best Audio Design
- Best Performance
- Best Action / Adventure
Outside of just awards, The Game Awards also acts as a prime spot to premiere video game news and reveal new or upcoming games.
The Game Awards 2023 took place on December 7th from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM EST. Public voting for The Game Awards was available until December 6th. Baldur’s Gate 3 won both jury and public votes, becoming the 2023 Game of the Year.
