Blind boxes have been making a huge comeback in recent years, ranging from the widely famous Labubu to the lesser-known Sonny Angel. Blind boxes are exactly what they sound like: boxes that you purchase, not knowing exactly what’s inside. They can have small figurines, key chains, mini food toys, etc.

“My Little Pony was my favorite when I was a kid,” said freshman Reagen Linde. “Now, my favorite is most likely Littlest Petshop, specifically the re-releases of their old series.”
The popularity of blind boxes is not unheard of, as the first popular boxes came out in the 1980s. They have remained in stores since, but the recent resurgence has been attributed to TikTok trends.
“I really like getting them for others and watching them open it,” said senior Mirabelle Malone. “I care more about the mystery and the excitement of opening them than I do what’s actually in them. They are a fad, [but] I really like getting random ones.”
One of the most popular places to find and purchase blind boxes is Target, as they sell a mix of trading cards and the more traditional blind boxes, including Pokémon TCG, MAG’s Miniverse, Disney brands, Littlest Petshop, etc.
While they are making a resurgence, some people don’t see the use, citing the Beanie Baby craze as part of a similar trend.
According to junior Killian Adams, “it’s essentially gambling, but gambling on something that probably won’t be worth anything later. They’re kind of wasteful, and they’re not that liquid.”
Blind boxes and their popularity are constantly fluctuating, and while they are trending now, there is a high chance they’ll fall from popularity soon. However, since they’re trending now, if you’re interested, test your luck and buy a blind box for a chance to get a “rare,” or just find a new cute figurine.
