Theatre and musical fans are thrilled that they are able to watch Hamilton whenever they want. If they have Disney Plus of course.

The film is a recording of Lin-Manuel Mirands’s 2015 Broadway musical Hamilton, which was inspired by the biography of founding father Alexander Hamilton.

“I’m excited for it,” said senior Rachael Severts. “It’s a great show that’s gotten a lot of younger people into the theatre and I’m excited that it’s finally going to be more accessible.”

One of the main things about the show that draws the younger generation into the theatre is the music, which is drawn from hip hop and even R&B musical techniques.

Even though people may not usually associate raps with history, the music still does a great job of showcasing history accurately and interestingly.

“I think that [Hamilton] is some of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s finest work,” said senior Jamie Lynn Cruz . “The raps are full of old school references and his internal rhymes are so clever. The instrumentals are also great in showcasing each historical figures’ personalities.”

While a recording of the show is far greater than not being able to see the show at all, it’s hard to ignore some concerns fans have about Disney adding it to their streaming service.

“I have the same concern many others have, which is that Disney may censor some of the words or cut out a scene because it’s not ‘family friendly,’” said Cruz.

And of course it’s going to be difficult to recreate the experience of seeing the show live in the theatre.

“It’s always going to be different and I will always prefer watching it on stage,” said Cruz. “But as long as they have hired the right people to film it and get the best angles possible I think it will be just as good as seeing it live.”

No matter what, being able to see Hamilton on a TV or phone screen is better than not being able to see it at all, especially when theatres are closed due to a pandemic. So be sure to log into Disney plus to experience the Hamilton sensation yourself.
