It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Along with the presents, hot cocoa, and Christmas lights, one of the best parts of this time of year is the music. Chart-topping titles are being played on loop in honor of the season, each having its own unique meanings united by the holiday. But which one is the best? Most iconic? I am going to be reviewing some of the most popular song titles from this time of year. Each song will be ranked on lyrics, instrumentals, and overall presentation.
“All I Want For Christmas is You” – 8.5/10
This song is one of the most popular pieces ever created, holding titles such as “most streamed song in one day.” It is feel-good and has a year-long comeback. The meaning behind this song is lovely, showcasing what this holiday season is really all about. Even though it can be repetitive at times, it is a classic that can’t be replaced.
“Last Christmas” – 10/10
This piece is the epitome of warmth, comfort, and joy that I personally seek during this time. From its lyrics to its instrumentation, this song showcases heartbreak and reflection of love that was lost over this season, contrasting with its upbeat execution. It has more depth than it lets on, which is a really interesting characteristic of a Christmas song.
“Underneath the Tree” – 8.5/10
“Underneath the Tree” shows how important loving one another is. It paints a picture of how presents don’t mean anything if Christmas is spent without loved ones. It is a very happy song with a very strong theme. Its instrumentation is very subtle compared to Clarkson’s strong vocals, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I would want to hear more of a ‘Christmas’ instrumental backing this piece.
“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” – 9.5/10
This song isn’t just good… It’s one of the best. It represents coming together in peace during this season, even in times of ‘war.’ The choir featured in the part really adds to the emotional depth in this song, making it not just a happy surface level christmas song. It shows the importance of coming together during the holiday season, bringing back the meaning of what Christmas is all about.
“Jinglebell Rock” – 7/10
“Jingle Bell Rock” isn’t one of my favorites, but it deserves its recognition. It is played in some of the best Christmas movies, such as Home Alone, and was featured in Mean Girls. The instrumentation is very unique, with the iconic part being played by a French horn, adding to the feeling of warmth during the cold season.
Each of these titles is unique in its own respective ways, all celebrating the Christmas season where everyone can come together and share love through gifts, quality time, and love. Through all of these ways that they are expressed, it shows that the Christmas season is important to so many.
