Every year, students set New Year’s resolutions in hopes of bettering themselves, but turning those ambitions into lasting habits is often a challenge. Rather than falling into the trap of abandoned promises, students can benefit from focusing on strategies for real change.
Many resolutions center around athletic goals.
“My biggest resolution is my recruiting next year for volleyball and getting picked up by the schools I’m interested in,” said Junior Katelynn Gillen.
Achieving such a goal takes more than good intentions.
“My biggest strategy is to stay disciplined on and off the court, keeping an elite mindset wherever I go and getting those consistent and thoughtful reps on the court!” said Gillen.
Remembering your motivation can make all the difference.
“I’ve laid out everything I have to get where I am now!!! The pursuit of my dreams is essential to me; it’s my purpose,” said Gillen.
Social growth is another area where resolutions play a big role. Navigating friendships and building healthy connections can be daunting, especially for those who are more reserved.
“My New Year’s Resolution for this year is to make new friends and become closer with the ones I already have,” said Junior Blue Valdez.
Progress takes courage.
“Last year, I was able to come out of my shell and form new friendships, which was a huge step for me, because I’m shy and introverted,” said Valdez.
Personal organization and self-care are also top priorities for many students and teachers.
“My New Year’s Resolution this year is to find a better balance between work and personal time while being able to take care of myself overall,” said Spanish teacher Mary Nartowicz. “To achieve that, I plan to be more intentional with my time by setting boundaries, staying organized, and making sure I build in time to rest and recharge instead of always pushing things off for later.”
Any resolution can be meaningful if paired with a realistic plan. By taking small, consistent steps and staying mindful of their reasons for change, students can transform fleeting resolutions into enduring habits that foster genuine growth.
