In April, members of the Salem High School chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, visited the Our Lady of Perpetual Help nursing home to give back to the local community.
After school, a dedicated group of 12 FFCLA members headed to the residency to share their passion for service and leadership. During the visit, students engaged with residents through sharing stories, painting, coloring pictures, and singing.

FCCLA partnered with Our Lady of Perpetual Help to organize a day of community and connection. Under the guidance of FCCLA Coordinator Maureen Hampton and Activity Director Stephanie Lohr, students planned a variety of engaging activities. Highlights included a suncatcher craft session and a lively karaoke and dance party, bringing joy to both the students and the residents.
“It was nice to see the students caring about the elderly residents,” said Hampton. “One of my male students has a promising career in working with the elderly, [but it was hard] seeing how some of the residents were struggling with their motor skills. This is reality, however, and gives the young students a point of view to help them understand the cycle of life.”
Most residents transfer into the nursing home because their medical and personal care needs exceed what can be safely managed at home or in assisted living. The staff works hard to create a warm and safe environment for the residents.
“[It was nice] seeing the women come out of their shells and hearing their stories,” said junior FCCLA secretary Olivia Carter. “Seeing everyone enjoy themselves made the experience very memorable and meaningful. I would definitely encourage people to get involved! Little acts of kindness can really make a difference, and not only does it help others, but it also gives you new experiences and connections.”
Our Lady in Perpetual Help shares many volunteer opportunities with the youth, such as reading, storytelling, playing games, doing arts and crafts, and simply visiting residents to make their day. They also offer jobs to certified nursing assistant (CNA) youth.
“I felt more like myself and happy, coming from being able to care about others, especially in physiological need,” said senior Ariston Ventura. “[I loved] to bring joy and care inclusively, which includes the elderly who still have lots of love left in them.”

Our Lady Perpetual Help hosts multiple events to help keep the elderly active and entertained, providing emergency financial assistance, food drives, and seasonal gift collections for families in need throughout the region. They create a supportive network that enriches the lives of their seniors while also helping the local community.
