We’re thrilled to introduce one of the newest faces joining the Salem High School family: Alexandria Hakim, who has stepped into the role of World History 1 teacher in the social studies department. A recent graduate of James Madison University, she is excited to make an impact on our students and community. We sat down with Hakim to learn more about her journey.
What do you teach and/ or/ your role? Please include sports and club sponsorships.
I teach World History 1 and currently sponsor SCA.

Co-sponsor Hakim and some of her SCA members posing for a photo. She and a few students had a recent field trip to Cox High School, attending the Cox Forum. Schools send their students’ SCA members from around the beach to attend the forum with the hopes of teaching all about leadership capabilities. (Photocredits: John Diwa)
Where were you previously, and what brought you to Salem?
Previously, I was a student at James Madison University. I graduated with my Master’s in May. While this is my first-year teaching, I did my student teaching at Salem while being a permanent substitute. I stayed at Salem, because I love the atmosphere here with the students and staff.
What is your favorite thing about Salem so far?
My favorite thing about Salem so far has been the students. I have been able to interact with students from every grade and been able to make connections with kids in different sports and clubs.
What inspired you to go into education (or work in a school)?
My inspiration to be a teacher comes from my dad. My dad is a science teacher at Princess Anne High School, and I have been able to see the impact he makes on students as an educator. Seeing the relationships he has cultivated inspired me to want to do the same. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was really young and would pretend to be like him and hold classes where my “students” were my stuffed animals and little brother.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
My fun fact is that when I was in high school, I won a superlative, “Most likely to be PAHS SCA Sponsor in 2025.” While I’m working at a better school, I am an SCA sponsor in 2025!
