We’re thrilled to introduce one of the newest faces joining the Salem High School family: Mason Goldman, who has stepped into the role of AP Literature and English 9 teacher. A veteran of Charlottesville, Virginia, she is excited to bring her love of English literature and creativity to our students and community. We sat down with Mrs. Goldman to learn more about her journey.

Name: Mason Goldman
What do you teach and/or what is your role? Please include sports and club sponsorships.
I teach English 9 and AP Literature (woohoo!) this year. AP Lit. is my favorite class to teach of all time.
Where were you previously, and what brought you to Salem?
I taught in Charlottesville for eight years before moving to Virginia Beach, and before that, I taught for eight years at Maury HS in Norfolk. My family lives here, so I moved back to the area to be closer to them (I have a four-year-old nephew who I wanted to see more!).
What is your favorite thing about Salem so far?
I love working in a school where people (students and staff alike) are proud to be. From substitutes who return after retiring to the number of staff who have worked here for their whole careers and all the enthusiasm students have for getting involved in student activities, the pride in being a Sundevil is effusive.
What inspired you to go into education (or work in a school)?
I knew I didn’t want a desk job, and I loved studying literature. I perhaps stumbled into teaching, but pretty immediately found that I really liked working with teenagers and talking about books with them.
Share a fun fact about yourself (favorite music, hobbies, books).
I collect vinyl records, and I like to paint (in a bunch of different mediums).
