We’re thrilled to introduce one of the newest faces joining the Salem High School family: Laura Dean, who has stepped into the role of Teacher’s Assistant. Dean is ready and excited to bring her shining smile and bright personality to our students and community.

Where were you previously, and what brought you to Salem?
I was a long-term substitute at another high school in Virginia Beach last year, and prior to that, I was a Child Protective Services Investigator for the Cities of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake for 10 years. After leaving child welfare, I wanted to continue working with youth and became a substitute teacher. I started substitute teaching a few days at Salem High School in the fall and really enjoyed my time working in the Special Education Department, so when an opportunity to join the department became available, I took it.
What is your favorite thing about Salem so far?
My favorite thing about Salem High School is working with teens who live in the same community where I live.
What inspired you to go into education?
I decided to go into education after leaving Child Welfare because I enjoy working with youth, and my parents both worked in the helping profession (a teacher and a nurse).
What are some fun facts about you?
My favorite sports team is the Chicago Cubs. I truly believe Wrigley Field is a magical place. I have been to more than 10 different MLB stadiums. I am a Boston Celtics fan, and I spend most of my free time watching or attending sporting events. Lastly, I am, of course, a Swiftie.
So, if you see this cheerful teacher’s assistant around the hallways, never be afraid to say hello or spark up a conversation. Especially if you have something to say about sports or Taylor Swift.
