We’re thrilled to introduce one of the newest faces joining the Salem High School family: Ms. Layla Barnes, who stepped into the role of teaching in English 11 last year. A recent graduate of University of Mary Washington, she is excited to bring her passion for literature and creative writing to our students and community. We sat down with Barnes to learn more about her journey.
Where were you previously, and what brought you to Salem?
I really don’t feel “new” to Salem. This is my second year at Salem, and it’s only my second year teaching, so I haven’t taught anywhere else before. Before I was teaching full-time, I was in college at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Coming to Salem for me meant coming home. I went to high school here, and I was in the visual arts strand of the VPAA.
What is your favorite thing about Salem so far?
The students! I love getting to see how creative my students are.
What inspired you to go into education (or work in a school)?
I have always loved to learn, and I also had a lot of really wonderful teachers (some of whom are still here at Salem) who were big influences for me. There were teachers who were there for me through some really difficult times in a way that other adults in my life weren’t, and I have always hoped to be able to have that same kind of positive influence on other kids who may need that kind of figure.
Share a fun fact about yourself (favorite music, hobbies, books).
I’m currently in grad school at ODU pursuing an MFA in creative writing.
