We sat down with Paul Shaffer to learn more about his journey.
What do you teach and/or what is your role? Please include sports and club sponsorships.
I teach Dramatic Literature, Acting II, Direction and Production, and Senior Synthesis
I oversee seniors in their projects, such as the Academy Children’s Theatre Company, Fringe Festival in May, and set up their internship with a professional theatre company.
This year I am also directing EURYDICE by Sarah Ruhl, which will be performed in February.
Where were you previously, and what brought you to Salem?
I taught for 28 years in Texas in the west Houston area. Looking to my future, I decided that when I retire, I would like to be in this area – close to the beach and not too far from the mountains. I know that it was meant to be when this job opened up, and I was hired.
What is your favorite thing about Salem so far?
I have wonderful colleagues who are insightful and very giving of their time as I become acclimated to Salem.
What inspired you to go into education (or work in a school)?
My father was really the inspiration that led me into education, although I didn’t realize it at the time. He completely supported every decision I made about my career(s,) which eventually led me back to theatre and into education. It was at this point that he just made a very simple statement, “It’s about time.” He was gently pushing me the whole time toward education.
Share a fun fact about yourself (favorite music, hobbies, books).
My hobby is actually my little French Bulldog named Bianca.
