The vocal stand has added a new choir to their collection: an acapella group named the SongDevils! The group, started by junior Ali Shoup, was excited to perform their assortment of music at the Holiday Showcase.
“I’ve always been [especially] fascinated by a cappella groups that get together and sing pop songs that you would recognize from the radio,” said Shoup. “As a student who has been in choir for a very long time, I’ve grown to appreciate all sorts of chorus music. I like everything from jazz to country to classical to spiritual.”
The group consists of around 20 members who have auditioned for a spot in the group. As an a cappella group, the SongDevils perform without any musical accompaniment, allowing their voices to take center stage.
“I started this group on a small scale last year with a few friends from just the vocal strand,” said Shoup. “I wanted to be able to do it on a larger scale, so this year I got it to be recognized as an official club. In my freshman year, I heard that there had been many attempts at creating an a cappella group that had never quite succeeded for a multitude of reasons.”
Shoup is assisted by Vice President Khloe Clarke, Social Media Manager Sierra Orr, and Treasurer/Secretary Wade Jernigan.
“[The group] feels great for team-building,” said senior Songdevils member Justin Leary. “Ali is very constructive with how she helps others.”
The SongDevils are set to perform with the Virginia Coast Chorus on January 31st and in vocal strand concerts in the Spring. For more information on the SongDevils, see Ali Shoup in room 300.
