Around every corner and on almost every desk, you’ll likely find a squishy, or a NeeDoh, in particular. Rising in popularity on multiple social media platforms, especially TikTok, NeeDohs have made their way to Salem.
“NeeDohs are preferred because they are a name brand squish, and people think it’s trendy and cool to have one,” said senior Jenna Presto. “I [personally] like a tough squishy, but I’m also not quick into [joining] trends.”
With so many people gaining interest in these fidgets, NeeDohs have been selling out. Stores have been trying their best to restock, but the chance of going to the store and finding one is low. Many people have begun to collect NeeDohs, leaving them even harder to find, but it’s not impossible.
“[NeeDoh’s] are great fidgets but are definitely overrated,” said senior Andrew Rocks, “I’ve seen people on TikTok with 20 Needohs.”
The reason for NeeDoh’s popularity isn’t for nothing; many students enjoy playing with them. The main reason students continue to buy them is partly because it’s a trend, but also because they find them helpful to strengthen their focus and reduce stress.
“I like [NeeDohs] because it gives me something to do with my hands, I am a very fidgety person and I always need to be holding or messing with something,” said Rocks. “They help me concentrate and Needohs are perfect for helping me.”
NeeDohs aren’t the only squishies on the market; however, they do stand out.
“I prefer NeeDohs to other squishes because no matter [the] one you buy the texture is never overstimulating, they’re easy to clean, not cheaply made, and super satisfying to squish,” said senior Mika Stuer.
Other reasons students enjoy NeeDohs are the variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Some of the highlights from the brand are their Nice Cubes, Dream Drops, Gumdrops, and Cool Cats.
“The material of [NeeDohs have a] thin jelly outside and the gooey inside, [the] texture heaven,” said Stuer, “[it’s] also affordable and durable.”
Whether or not NeeDohs are worth the hype is up to you; However, social media seems to find them worth emptying the shelves for.
“I had [NeeDohs] before they became popular,” said senior Hannah McMillin. “[I personally believe they are overrated] especially when there’s better toys out there like Kinetic Sand.”
Whether students see NeeDohs as helpful tools or just another trend, their popularity is undeniable. From stress relief to social influence, these small squishes have had a big impact and, for now, they’re here to stay.
